Personality development is one of the
interesting stories that are often discussed in the novel. Basically, every
individual personality is developing from childhood to adult. The characters in
literary works, with no exception, also have such personality development. The
psychology approach nowadays become part of the literature analysis. The fact
that literature was the part of human mind product, make them can be analyzed
use psychology point of view. The study was aimed to analyze the two
continued novels from the personality development of Jean Louise Scout in
Harper Lee’s two novels, How to Kill a
Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman
from emotional, cognitive, moral, and religious aspect using Jacques Lacan
psychoanalysis theory.
It is qualitative
study and data of the study were taken from the two novels elements such as
words, phrases, sentences, quotes, monologues, and the dialogs while the
supporting data collected from books, journals, thesis as the preliminary
studies and essay which relevant to the novel analysis. Based on data analysis,
the result shows that in to kill mocking bird the
conflict is childhood conflict such as bullying, school life, and friendship.
However, in go set a watchman, Scout has to deal with the more adult world such
as love, ideology, recognition and acceptance from the society etc. This
massive development occur in at least three aspect of Scout’s life: emotional
cognitive, moral and religious.
Furthermore, from these two novel which capture the personal
development of Scout, the great moral value in term of racism. Besides, the way
how Atticus nurtures his child was quite impressive and full of fatherhood. As
an example, when Atticus become the protector for his family and even society
from the mad dog and how he protected Jem from being accused as the Bob Ewell
murderer. In addition, Atticus teaches his children to be strong and not
furious of being bullied.
