The creation of the dance work "Subali
Gamajayanti" originates from the choreographer's response to the waning
interest of the younger generation in wayang, aiming to innovate dance
performances to captivate the youth's attention and introduce puppetry stories
in a fresher way. This dance piece adopts the tale of Subali from the Ramayana
epic, portraying him as a steadfast ruler and elder brother protecting the
honor of his family and homeland.
The presentation form of this work is a
fusion of dramatic dance, combining the collaborative concept between dance and
puppetry to enhance narration, dramatic levels, and ambiance in each scene. The
creation process involves the choreographer's study of several relevant
theories, including Jacqueline Smith's dramatic dance, Pina Bausch's dance
dramaturgy, Sal Murgiyanto's choreography theory, and Rajagopalachari's wayang
and Ramayana epic.
The creation of the dance "Subali
Gamajayanti" employs various methods, starting with Jacqueline Smith's
construction approach I, then conceptualizing the artwork by determining
themes, titles, synopses, dramatic designs, techniques, styles, and selecting
cast members. Subsequently, the creation process follows construction approach
I, encompassing initial stimulation, exploration, improvisation, evaluation,
and refinement stages. Additionally, the creation process involves supportive
elements related to multimedia usage, dance accompaniment, makeup, costumes,
props, stage decoration, and lighting.
The outcome of the dance creation
"Subali Gamajayanti" in terms of artistic form draws inspiration from
the visual and narrative elements of the Subali puppetry performance in the
Ramayana epic. The creation process utilizes construction approach I with
Jacqueline Smith's dual cone dramatic design across seven scenes, including
introduction, scenes I-V, and the ending. Meanwhile, the dance movement style
is inspired by the Mataraman style and the characteristic movements of noble
sons, involving three dancers performing 26 movements within a duration of 9.30
minutes. The overall content of this dance work conveys the true meaning of
struggle, solidarity, and courage in facing challenges threatening the survival
and honor of a nation.
In conclusion, the diversity of forms
presented visually, aurally, narratively, and artistically, integrating
innovative choreography with puppetry, aims not only to entertain but also to
inspire audiences to reflect on the important values of struggle in the context
of human life and existence.
