Colonialism is one of the essential topics in history education that requires students’ critical and in-depth understanding. However, monotonous learning approaches often make students less interested and unable to comprehend the complexity of colonialism as a historical process. This study aims to analyze the influence of the film Bumi Manusia on students’ perspectives regarding colonialism in Indonesia. The research is based on the notion that visual media, particularly film, not only serves as entertainment but also has the power as an educational medium capable of conveying historical messages contextually and emotionally. Furthermore, the colonial perspective framework in this study refers to Purwanto, who emphasizes that colonialism is a complex historical relationship encompassing aspects of power, economy, and socio-cultural dynamics. This research employs a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design using the one-group pretest-posttest model. Data were collected through comprehension tests and questionnaires distributed to 35 students of class XI-3 at SMA Negeri 7 Surabaya. Data analysis was conducted using the Paired Sample T-Test to examine the significant differences before and after the treatment, as well as the N-Gain calculation to measure the effectiveness of students’ perspective and comprehension improvement. The results show a significant increase in posttest scores compared to pretest scores. The average pretest score of 54.83 increased to 66.00 in the posttest, with a mean difference of 11.17 points. The Paired Sample T-Test results indicate a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. In addition, the N-Gain calculation yielded an average value of 0.5671 or 56.71%, which falls into the moderate category. These findings demonstrate that the film Bumi Manusia can serve as a relevant, contextual, and meaningful alternative learning medium in shaping students’ perspectives on colonialism in Indonesia.
