Ibu adalah sosok penting dalam pertumbuhan anak, yang melahirkan dan membesarkan anak mereka, digambarkan sebagai sosok yang luar biasa kuat dan dapat diandalkan untuk keluarga. Peran ibu juga tercermin dalam perilaku kasih sayang dan kepedulian untuk anak-anak dan keluarga. Penelitian ini membahas tentang peran ibu di novel Room karya Emma Donoghue. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Maternal Thinking oleh Sarah Ruddick dan konsep MotherSpace oleh Marsha Marotta dan Irish Young. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Ma telah memenuhi tiga tuntutan keibuan di dalam ruangan. Pertama adalah menjaga pertumbuhan Jack dengan memberinya kebutuhan fisik seperti makanan bergizi. Kedua adalah perkembangan kognitif seorang anak di mana Ma telah mengajar Jack membaca dan berpikir. Permintaan ketiga terpenuhi setelah mereka keluar dari ruangan. Keibuan Ma dibatasi oleh ruang di dalam dan di luar. Ruang yang disediakan adalah aturan dan tugas bagi perempuan untuk dianggap sebagai ibu yang baik atau buruk. Masyarakat ingin tahu bagaimana Ma merawat Jack sendirian di dalam ruangan dan ingin memastikan bahwa Ma telah memenuhi standar untuk layak diberi label ibu yang baik atau tidak sesuai dengan standar mereka.

Mother is a vital figure in the growth of a child, the one who bears and rears their children, portrayed as an extraordinarily strong and reliable figure for the family. Motherhood is also reflected in the behavior of compassion and mutual care for both children and families. This study discussed motherhood in Emma Donoghue’s Room. The theory used to answer the problem formulation in this study is the maternal thinking theory by Sarah Ruddick and the MotherSpace concept by Marsha Marotta and Irish Young theory. This study concludes that Ma has accomplished three demands of motherhood inside the room. The first one is to take care of Jack's growth by giving him physical needs like nutritious food. Second is the cognitive development of a child where Ma has taught Jack how to read and think. The third demand is accomplished after they got out of the room. Ma’s motherhood has been limited by space both inside and outside the room. The space created is the rules and assignments for women to be considered as a good or bad mother. Society wants to know how Ma takes care of Jack alone inside the room and they want to make sure that Ma has fulfilled their standard to make sure Ma has the label as a good mother or not according to their standard.
