Proses Pemaknaan Simbolik Monumen Jayandaru di Alun-Alun Sidoarjo Tahun 2013-2015
The Process of Symbolic Interpretation of the Jayandaru Monument in Sidoarjo Square 2013-2015
Monumen Jayandaru merupakan monumen yang dibangun di Alun-Alun Sidoarjo sebagai simbol identitas daerah yang merepresentasikan karakteristik Kabupaten Sidoarjo melalui simbol udang dan bandeng. Kehadiran monumen tersebut menarik perhatian masyarakat dan memunculkan beragam pemaknaan terhadap simbol yang terkandung di dalamnya. Perbedaan pemaknaan tersebut semakin terlihat setelah pemasangan sembilan patung manusia yang menimbulkan tanggapan beragam dari masyarakat Sidoarjo.
Penelitian ini membahas pemaknaan simbolik Monumen Jayandaru di Alun-Alun Sidoarjo pada periode 2013–2015. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui latar belakang kemunculan Monumen Jayandaru serta menganalisis proses pemaknaan simbolik yang berkembang terhadap monumen tersebut pada periode yang sama. Menggunakan metode sejarah yang meliputi heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemunculan Monumen Jayandaru dilatarbelakangi oleh upaya menghadirkan simbol identitas Kabupaten Sidoarjo di ruang publik sekaligus memperkuat citra daerah melalui representasi potensi dan
karakteristik masyarakat Sidoarjo. Gagasan tersebut diwujudkan melalui pembangunan Monumen Jayandaru yang dilaksanakan melalui kerja sama antara PT. Sekar Laut Tbk dan Pemerintah Kabupaten Sidoarjo melalui program Corporate Social Responsibility/CSR.
Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa pemaknaan simbolik terhadap Monumen Jayandaru berkembang seiring dengan respons masyarakat terhadap simbol-simbol yang ditampilkan. Keberadaan sembilan patung manusia memunculkan perbedaan pandangan antara pemerintah daerah dan sebagian kelompok sosial-keagamaan. Pemerintah daerah memaknai patung-patung tersebut sebagai representasi kehidupan masyarakat Sidoarjo, sedangkan sebagian kelompok masyarakat menilai keberadaannya kurang sesuai dengan karakter religius masyarakat Sidoarjo.

The Jayandaru Monument is a monument built in Sidoarjo Town Square as a symbol of regional identity representing the characteristics of Sidoarjo Regency through the symbols of shrimp and milkfish. The presence of the monument attracted public attention and gave rise to various interpretations of the symbols embodied within it. These differing interpretations became more apparent after the installation of nine human statues, which generated diverse responses from the people of Sidoarjo.
This study discusses the symbolic meaning of the Jayandaru Monument in Sidoarjo Town Square during the period 2013-2015. The research aims to examine the background behind the emergence of the Jayandaru Monument and to analyze the process of symbolic interpretation that developed around the monument during the same period. This study employs the historical method, consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography.
The results of the study indicate that the emergence of the Jayandaru Monument was motivated by efforts to present a symbol of Sidoarjo Regency’s identity in public space while simultaneously strengthening the region’s image through the representation of the potential and characteristics of Sidoarjo society. This idea was realized through the construction of the Jayandaru Monument, carried out through cooperation between PT. Sekar Laut Tbk and the Government of Sidoarjo Regency under the Corporate Social Responsibility/CSR program.
This study also shows that the symbolic meaning of the Jayandaru Monument developed alongside public responses to the symbols displayed. The existence of the nine human statues gave rise to differing views between the local government and several socio-religious groups. The local government interpreted the statues as representations of the life of Sidoarjo society, while some community groups considered their presence less compatible with the religious character of the people of Sidoarjo.
